A special mission in Akihabara

Its been a while since I had time to make some progress, but all of that will change this week.

I went to Akihabara to purchase 5 specific things:

  • A 60mm case-fan for the front panel
  • Some sort of cable guard for the fan
  • Screws to fix the power supply to the case
  • Screws to mount the optical disc drive
  • Low-profile ram

The latter 4 items were not hard to find, Nishikawa Denshi 西川電子 is a paradise for screw lovers and it didnt take long for me to come across the perfect screws for my purpose.

Since the only criteria for the ram were relative affordability and height, I settled for two sticks 8gb sticks of corsair vengence LPX at 2666 mhz for roughly 5000 yen from Dospara a bit further back.

Sadly the 60 mm fan proved a bit more elusive, particularly the Noctua NF-A4x60 I had in mind. Most shops have 40 or 80mm fans, but hardly anyone has 60 mm. After literally searching for over an hour I found one noname fan at dospara for roughly 1500 yen and bought it in case I wouldnt be able to find a better one.

Additionally I also got a mini sata to sata+power adapter cable. I had ordered one of those from aliexpress a few days ago, but the one on the shelve seemed a better fit.

I was ready to go give up and go home, when I finally found the noctua at one of the Tsukumo shops on the main street. Given that the clerk had toconfirm twice that I want the 60mm, I guess not many people buy them.

With the new parts put-in the project is finally taking shape.

Given that it is now fully functional (except for a way to attach the optical disc drive), it was time to think about an operating system…
